Ken's meeting notes

EAA 1394

13 Jan 08

The Jan meeting of EAA Chapter 1394 was at Ken Kotic’s hanger at Creve Coure airport.  The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm by President Bob Rockford.  Those also in attendance were: Dan Bauer, Ken Dressel, Bill Florich, Tim Johnson (p) L-16, Don Jonas, Dot Kotik, Ken Kotik, Gary Limming, Harry Marienau, Luther Mc Connel (p), Allen Reeves, Bob Rockford, Bob Stoner, Terry Turnquist, David Walle, and Michael Wootton (p).

Bob Rockford presented various EAA Awards for participation and leadership roles to the chapter leadership. These recognize the effort that these people have preformed.

The Chapter has received a letter and $500 from the Greenville in recognition of our assistance with their fly-in in Oct of 06.  The secretary will forward a thank you letter.

If anyone is interested, the Neiuport 28 that Robert built for an Australian is available for sale.  Some of you may have seen it at Gardner or Oshkosh 06, a really beautiful plane.  There developed some problems getting the plane to or into Australia so the original buyer sold the plane to someone in Montana.  The plane was dismantled and stored since.  The current owner has it for sale for $26,000 (?), a real bargain given the engine, instruments, and plane.  Contact Bob Rockford for more details.

There is also a 5/8 scale Sindlinger Hurricane.  It comes with 2 redrives with an Olds Alum V8 engine, some instruments and many other parts.  The construction is far enough along to sit on the retractable landing gear.  The fuselage and center section are joined but can be taken apart for transporting.  Owner, Terry White, is asking $6000.  Contact him at Warbabies1946@sbcglobal.net or 269-426-8218, in SW Michigan.

There was a very interesting article, in the “Replica Fighters” magazine.  Produced by the Replica Fighters Association, we recommend that you consider membership if you are interested.  It was a reprint from the November 06 issue of the GWAA (Great War Aviation Association, another group to look into if your interested) newsletter written by Butch Wilock.  The article concerned the Oct 06 meeting of the GWA (Great War Association) which is a group of WWI reinactors that conduct bi-annual war reenactments at their location in central Pennsylvania.  This was the first time that any aircraft were involved.  If you would like to read the article, contact Allen or Ken to get a copy.

We have the following fly-ins to participate in:

1.     Downtown Airport in May

2.     Gardner, Fathers day weekend

3.     Our own fly=in the 3rd week in Sep

Don’t forget, everyone is invited to attend Bob’s workshop sessions at his home on Wed evenings.  If you need to make a part, want some knowledge, expand your knowledge, want to try your hand a building, etc come to Bob’s for a learning experience that’s fun.

Just a reminder, dues are $36 and due at your earliest connivance.

The meeting closed at 2:00 pm

The Oct meeting of EAA Chapter 1394 was at Ken Kotic’s hanger at Creve Coure airport. The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm by President Bob Rockford. Those also in attendance were: Dan Bauer, Ken Dressel, Bill Florich, Don Jonas, Dot Kotik, Ken Kotik, Gary Limming, Harry Marienau, Allen Reeves, Bob Rockford, Terry Turnquist, David Walle, and Dave Valdez.

Gary Liming discussed his trip to the races at Reno. It was an exciting event and after a accident he realized how dangerous the event was. Dangerous, to both to the racers and to the spectators. There were 2 accidents involving 2 deaths. Gary got one of accident on video which is now with the FAA. Shall we start a pool on how long it takes to be returned?

Dan, Bob, Allen and Ken discussed their trip to Dayton for the “Rendezvous” put on by the Great War Aeroplane Association. We all had a great time, especially at the banquet. Six Hundred attended, (at the first Rendezvous there were 60), we were entertained by the Air Force “Band of Flight” and had several entertaining speakers. Awards were given to the pilots attending with their planes. Our good friend Mark Bauer received his Majors commission for his second

year in attendance with his plane.

At Dayton we set up out tent with the banner prominently displayed. We talked to people about our group and sold quite a few of the prints that Ken Kotic donated to the club. They were a great attention getter and brought many people to the tent to find out more. We had 10 different prints and sold them for $20 each as well a few posters for a total of $705. Thank you Ken, your donation was a great success.

We discussed weather or not we wanted to put together an event for next fall. It was decided to do so. At next months meeting we will decide what and where we want to hold the event. Ken Dressel will find out information on Sackman Field in Columbia, IL. Gary Limming will do the same for Smart field. Bob Rockford will work on arrangements for Creve Coure. At the meeting we will decide which field will work out the best and determine what kind of event we would promote. So start thinking about where and what kind of event you want to work on, how we should charge (by the car or by the person), how we can make enough money to pay expenses, and how to publicize the event.

We also will have Officer Elections. If you want to participate throw your hat in the ring, let us know.

December’s meeting will be a dinner meeting at Bob’s. Bring your wives and/or sweetheart and have a great time. The date is to be determined.

Bob Rockford still has 3 covering books available at $10.00 each. These are the best books available for anyone needing to learn the secrets of fabric covering. Give him a call if you want one.

Don’t forget, everyone is invited to attend Bob’s workshop sessions at his home on Wed evenings. If you need to make a part, want some knowledge, expand your knowledge, want to try your hand a building, etc come to Bob’s for a learning experience that’s fun.

The meeting closed at 2:15 pm

8 July 07

Well after a couple of months of meetings due to multiple conflicts we held the July meeting of EAA Chapter 1394 at Ken Kotik’s hanger. The meeting was called to order at 1:00 pm by President Bob Rockford. Those also in attendance were: Dan Bauer, Scott Carnegie, Ken Dressel, Bill Florich, Ken and Dottie Kotik, Don Jonas, Allen Reeves, Bob Stoner, Terry Turnquist, and David Walle.

We discussed the status of making a banner for the chapter. Ken Kotik designed a banner for the chapter and the cost for 2 rubberized fabric banners 8 X3 ft. is $216. A motion was made to buy the banners, seconded and approved.

Bob Rockford still has 3 covering books available at $10.00 each. These are the best books available for anyone needing to learn the secrets of fabric covering. Give him a call if you want one.

We reviewed current member’s projects and Allen and Ken Dressel’s trip to Gardner. They both took many pictures and saw some nice machines. Baslee was there, along with Valley Engineering with a new aircraft design powered with there new BIG TWIN engine. See enclosure for a photo. It is a very straight forward and simple design. Nothing to make your heart throb but functional.
